I heard that this year’s El Niño is expected to be particularly intense, which could mean a more active typhoon season than usual. With that in mind, I picked Yokohama for our little getaway to celebrate my birthday instead of my original plan to visit Hokkaido. Japan has just gone through a pretty strong typhoon this week, and I’ll be honest—I was terrified. I knew our home was sturdy enough; our real estate agent had reassured us more than once that it was reinforced to withstand both typhoons and earthquakes.
